Herman Ottó Museum

„We are travelling in memories”

The Herman Ottó Museum preserves, collects and makes memories itself. The museum's visitors can collect their own memories by exploring the knowledge in the different exhibition halls or by the many different forms of entertainment based on them. If museum-goers are in the mood for quiet observation, they can gaze at centuries-old paintings on the walls, play theatre and dress up in costumes, indulge in contemporary art or dive millions of years into the past to see natural wonders and prehistoric curiosities.

Pannonian Sea Museum

The permanent exhibitions of the Pannon Sea Museum are waiting for children and adults alike as a real natural scientific playground. The exhibition called „On the paths of primeval forests” takes the museum-goers to a trip into an ancient world full of secrets. Two floors of archaeological findings and authentic illustrations reveal the history of the Miocene era. Through playful and interactive experiences, visitors can also become part of the 7-million-year-old world of the marsh Cyprus that is long gone. In Dinosaurs Land museum-goers will be taken to the Mesozoic era, the world of dinosaurs. The everyday life of the prehistoric animals can be experienced through the SAURUCARIA expedition's time travel, based on a unique "steampunk" visual world. The Minerals of the Carpathians permanent exhibition displays the minerals of the mountain system, by geographical breakdown, over an area of about 140 m2, through a thousand selected pieces.

Herman Ottó Heritage House, Pele House

The museum in Miskolc was named after Ottó Herman in 1953. The scientist, known as the "last polyhistor", was strongly associated with the city and the Bükk Mountains. Ottó Herman and his wife, Kamilla Borosnyay, welcome visitors to their former summer cottage, the Pele House. Breaking away from the usual biographical approach to heritage houses, the exhibition presents the everyday life of the cozy summer cottage and the natural wonders to be discovered. The exhibition lets the visitor into the life, moods and everyday moments of a summer cottage, bringing the summers of Ottó Herman and Kamilla Borosnyay in Lillafüred very close to the time of today.

Archaeological Repository

The Herman Ottó Museum has 12 collection units, of which the archaeological one is the largest with 3 million archaeological pieces. An original black and white photograph and a yellowed newspaper article gave the impetus for the creation of an unusual exhibition in the city's rust belt, the warehouse, which is now permanently on display as the Archaeological Repository, entitled Findings from the Earth, with special findings from all archaeological periods. The 2,700 objects in the exhibition provide an interactive and experiential way to learn about the past, while the wealth of handheld artefacts and replicas on display also allows you to discover the parallels between history and today.

The residential building is now the property of the city. The building was converted from a ground floor building into a one-storey building with a loft, based on the plans of architect Pál Krisztik. The first exhibition was opened in 1992.

The Szalay Collection, a permanent exhibition of drawings by Lajos Szalay, is housed in the exhibition space known as the Petró House. Since September 2008, the upstairs has been home to the Nagy Kunst Museum of Contemporary Art Studies.

Thália House Theatre History and Actors Museum

The Herman Ottó Museum and the Miskolc Art Gallery opened their doors in the autumn of 1996 on the site of the first theatre in Miskolc, built in 1823, to present the two centuries of acting in Miskolc and Hungary.

The exhibits on display recall the beginnings of acting in Miskolc, the operation and modernisation of the second stone theatre, which was opened in 1857.

The largest unit of the exhibition presents the last half century of the theatre in one large room. The space here recreates the world of the stage. You can also feel what it's like to stand on the "planks that mean the world".

Objects, tools and artist's drawings on display give you a behind-the-scenes experience. You can try on costumes and see a real light organ.

The museum also rotates temporary exhibitions related to the world of theatre.

Museum education sessions for children are available on request.
