The past and present of the Avas Lookout Tower

The Lookout Tower, which was completely renovated in 2023, is the third of this sort of building on Avas Hill. The first one was erected in 1906 by the Borsodi Bükk Association, on the occasion of the return of the ashes of Ferenc Rákóczi II, the solemn procession also passed through Miskolc. The temporary structure was demolished after a few months and the next one had to wait 28 years. The tower, designed by Bálint Szeghalmy in the Székely style, was inaugurated in 1934, but it could not stand for long. It was destroyed by the events of the 1956 Revolution and Struggle for Freedom in Miskolc, specifically by a Soviet tank shell.

The lookout tower, now known as the TV tower, was built based on the designs of Miklós Hofer and György Vörös and was inaugurated in a ceremony on 20 August 1963. The genius of the designers is shown by the simple yet unique form of the multifunctional building, which has become a nationally recognised landmark by the fact that its silhouette can be represented by a few lines.

In 2023, not only the Lookout Tower, but also its immediate surroundings were renewed. The new curvy walkway with pergolas offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the view in a pleasant environment, sitting on benches shaded by a pergola or just walking. A new catering unit under the Lookout Tower will make it even more comfortable for visitors to relax.
