Israelite cemetery on Avas Hill
Located on the north-west part of the hill, the cemetery, also known as the Jewish Grief, has around 6,000 gravestones on an area of almost 6 hectares, the oldest of which date back to the 19th century. In addition to rabbis and religious leaders, many former notable personalities from the local artistic and economic life were buried here.
The northern part of the cemetery also serves as a place for the exhumed graves and martyrs' monuments of the Jewish cemeteries in the surrounding area that have been closed down.
The memorial area in the cemetery was created to present the cultural heritage of Jewish people, and visitors can learn about the history of the cemetery, the architectural features of the typical tombs of rabbis and famous citizens, and other interesting facts.
