The rows of cellars in Avas Hill
On the northern, northeastern slopes of Avas Hill, the Avas cellar system is hidden in a winding path, which from the 19th century was also called the "comfort quarter" of Miskolc. Unique in Europe, the hill is located just a few minutes' walk from the city centre, with more than 900 cellars and wineries, of which even 300–400-year-old cellars are not a rare sight. The cellars of Avas were not only the scene of exuberant Bacchus pleasures, but also of a rich cultural life. Famous figures of the contemporary Hungarian literary and public life, such as Ferenc Móra, Zsigmond Móricz, Artúr Görgey, Lajos Horváth, Pál Gyulai, Dezső Szilágyi or József Lévay, who hosted his contemporaries in his own cellar, were among the famous guests there.
The cellar rows are reminders of Miskolc's long-forgotten wine culture, which was put to an end by the outbreaks of the great phylloxera infection in the 1880s. But not for forever. Since the 1970s, the wine region of the Bükk Mountains, which includes the Miskolc vineyards, has been created thanks to the plantation of vineyards in the area. Even today, several nationally renowned wineries are making a name for local wines, while the various festivals on Avas Hill attract thousands of visitors to its cobblestoned rows.
