The German shepherd dog named Paw

The German shepherd dog named Paw

The famous rescue dog of Miskolc was born in 1994. As a member of the Spider Rescue Team, he saved hundreds of lives in several countries all over the world. Few dogs can claim to have been honoured with a statue in their lifetime; in 2004, a statue designed by Borbála Szanyi was unveiled next to the crossroads known as the Electric Policeman in Miskolc. Paw died of pneumonia in 2006. Since then, not a single day goes by without flowers and memorial candles in front of his statue.

Frog

Frog

„It blinks like a frog in the meet jelly.” The phrase referring to the popular legend was in circulation in the city and then the story became nationally famous when it was told on postcards at the beginning of the last century. Today, the winter dish that is listed even in the Collection of Hungarian Values is commemorated in the form of a festival, traditionally held during the carnival season.

Squirrel with an acorn in his paws

Squirrel with an acorn in his paws

In Miskolc you don't have to go as far as the zoo to meet squirrels! It's impossible to take a walk in Miskolctapolca part of the city without bumping into a squirrel or two running around, but the same can be said for other green spaces and parks in the city. Since squirrels can find a daily meal at any time of the year, you don't necessarily have to feed them. If we do, we should only offer them nuts or peanuts.

Swans

Swans

Swans living in the Boating Lake have been part of the natural scenery of Miskolctapolca since time immemorial. These birds belong to the Anatidae family, native to Europe and Western Asia, and in Miskolctapolca you can see the white mute swan. This species has been protected in Hungary since 1954. It is not recommended to feed them, since breads, crisps, biscuits and other foods for human consumption rich in carbohydrate can be harmful for them, especially for the young ones.

Two bears playing

Two bears playing

Borka Füles and Dorka Forgó. The two bears with playful names are residents of the Miskolc Zoo, and were given their names by the Miskolc people themselves in a public vote. Borka and Dorka were just over one and a half years old when they moved to Miskolc from the zoo in the distant city of Copenhagen. They are real ever-moving female bears, constantly entertaining their visitors. Sometimes they play catch or wrestle with each other, sometimes they enjoy a swim in their pool, sometimes they climb trees several metres above the ground in a fearless way.

Trout

Trout

If you're in Miskolc, be sure not to miss the Trout Farm in Miskolc-Lillafüred, where you can not only enjoy heavenly dishes, but also a truly spectacular sight! Established in 1932, the farm breeds its own trouts, which are demanding animals that need to be kept in water at the right temperature, oxygen content and flow rate. This is the only place in Hungary where the indigenous brown trout is farmed in large scale.

Salamander

Salamander

The spotted salamander in its distinctive colour is the heraldic animal of the Aggtelek National Park, and is often seen around Miskolctapolca. It is the subject of several ancient legends, often because of its poisonous powers. Its bright colour draws attention to its slightly poisonous skin. The exudate produced by the glands with black spots on the temples can cause mucous inflammation if it reaches the eyes or mouth, so it is best not to disturb it when you cross its pathways.

Monk

Right in the neighbourhood of the Cave Baths of Miskolctapolca, we can find the foundations of a large building where an abbey used to exist. The 120-150 cm high walls, which can still be seen today, are over 900 years old and were revealed in 2012 by archaeologists from the Miskolc Herman Otto Museum. The abbey was built on an island, where a circular church already stood in the 11th century. The rotunda may have been the parish church of the settlement here, the earliest building of the medieval Miskolc. The Benedictine monks who lived there retained the important documents of the Miskóc clan, the city's founders. The abbey was destroyed in 1532, and so were the documents relating to the foundation of Miskolc.

One of the most distinctive symbols of Miskolc, the Avas Lookout Tower towers over the city from the top of the northern side of Avas Hill, below it the historic rows of wine cellars and the Avas Church, which is considered the oldest sacral site in the city.Inaugurated in 1963 and used to function as a TV tower, from the 72-metre-high Lookout Tower you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the city, and looking out from it, you can feel as if the whole of Miskolc is stretching out at your feet.

Otter

Otter

The otter sculpture, modelled on one of the writer István Fekete's popular novel characters, is a memorial to fish biologist István Vásárhelyi and the writer himself.

István Fekete arrived at the Garadna Valley site at the invitation of the respected zoologist, and his experiences there inspired his novel Lutra, in which Vásárhelyi's character appears as the "old fish scientist Péter Uzsárdi".

The story of the novel's genesis has a cult status that is still visible today, so don't be surprised if you meet Lutra several times during a trip to Miskolc-Lillafüred.
