Statue of the Madonna with mug

The cholera epidemic passed by the city, whose thankful dwellers erected the baroque memorial in 1738, with foot structure, originally decorated with the statues of the saints, and the statue of the Madonna on a high Corinthian column.

Formerly there was a market in the neighbourhood of the statue protected with gridiron and the potters of the region hung their products on the fence, the statue’s name – Madonna with mug – originates from this time.

The „Immaculata”, i.e. Immaculate Virgin Mary column was erected in 1738 in the memory of the plague epidemic. Originally it stood at the cross point of Papszer Street and Szemere Street; it was moved from there to its present place. The figure of Mary staying on the globe is visible on the three-arm, slim column placed on a voluted foot.
