National Theatre of Miskolc

National Theatre of Miskolc

The late classicistic theatre enriched with romantic elements was erected between 1847 and 1857; its tower was completed in 1884. The predecessor of the building was the first stone theatre of the today’s Hungary playing in Hungarian language.

Bertalan Szemere was the chairman of the public limited company financing the building of the theatre. Upon request of Szemere the building was designed by József Cassano.

Its eclectic tower was built between 1883 and 1884 for fireguard services. The most remarkable renewal and extension of the building took place between 1957 and 1959, then between 1993 and 1996.

As a result of the modernization and extension a theatre-complex was established, as such unique also in Central Europe, consisting of the chamber theatre, studio theatre, open-air theatre, supplying workshops, administrative building and actors’ apartments.
